Adani Energy, a leading energy solutions provider, recently announced the commissioning of Kharghar Vikhroli Transmission Limited (KVTL). This project is crucial for Mumbai, as the existing transmission corridor is not sufficient to meet the ever-growing electricity demand of the city.
Built by Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL), the project will provide an additional 1,000 MW of reliable electricity to Mumbai. This will help to mitigate any future instances of grid failure, such as those that occurred in February 2022 and October 2020, when many parts of the city were left without power for a considerable time.
With the completion of this project, Mumbai now has access to a 400 KV grid within its municipal geography. This will improve reliability and stability, as well as providing increased sustainability for the city's bullet trains, Metro Rail and railways, as well as commercial and residential establishments.
The KVTL project consists of approximately 74 circuit kilometres of 400 kV and 220 kV transmission lines, along with a 1,500 MVA 400kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at Vikhroli, the first 400KV substation of its kind in Mumbai. This GIS has the most compact design of any 400 KV substation, occupying only 9,500 sq m area, and was made possible through the vertical stacking of 400kV and 220kV GIS.
AESL faced many challenges in the construction of the line, including difficult terrain and height restrictions in some urban areas. Innovative solutions were employed, such as constructing six towers in creeks using heavy rigs on floating barges, and special horizontal configuration towers in areas with height restrictions.
The KVTL project starts in Kharghar in Navi Mumbai, passes through urban locations, and terminates at Vikhroli in Mumbai. Major elements of the project include a 400 kV/220 kV GIS Vikhroli substation, an Air Insulated System switchyard at Kharghar, a 400 kV double/multi circuit Kharghar-Vikhroli line, and a 400 kV loop in loop out on Talegaon-Kalwa line and 220 kV LILO on Trombay-Salsette line at Vikhroli.
