Actress Malinda Williams starts program to teach coding to women at historically black colleges and universities.
Actress Malinda Williams is making a positive impact on the tech industry by launching a new coding boot camp for women. As a well-known star from the show "Wood", Williams understands the value of diversity and equal opportunities in the workplace. That's why she has created The E.S.T.E.A.M. Project, a coding boot camp specifically designed to empower women at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The initiative, which is part of Williams' non-profit organization, the Arise And Shine Foundation Inc., aims to equip women with valuable coding and technical skills. Williams explains, "As a professional actress and someone who has received support from my own community, I believe in the power of collaboration and paying it forward." She goes on to say, "The Arise And Shine Foundation is dedicated to empowering women to reach their goals, and coding is a powerful tool that will be essential in the future. The E.S.T.E.A.M. Project will provide young women with the opportunity to acquire these valuable skills and propel them forward in the 21st century."

The pilot four-week program focuses on education and includes mentoring in entrepreneurship, science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). Participants will have the chance to explore how coding, app development, and STEAM training can open doors to success in a variety of career paths. They will also learn Apple's SwiftUI programming language and attend an in-person weekend filled with inspiration, valuable life lessons, skill-building, and networking. Apple has joined forces with the project through its Community Education Initiative, providing hardware, scholarships, and professional learning assistance.

Williams founded the Arise And Shine Foundation in 2023, driven by her mission to be a source of information, inspiration, and empowerment for women from all walks of life. The foundation collaborates with educational institutions, corporations, and the community to initiate and amplify programs that promote the personal and professional growth of underserved and underrepresented women and girls.

Applications for The E.S.T.E.A.M. Project are currently being accepted from women enrolled at HBCUs until March 31, 2024. The program will kick off with an in-person event from May 30 to June 2, 2024, at the Jackson State University campus in Jackson, MS. This event is a great opportunity for women to come together, learn valuable skills, and be inspired to pursue their dreams in the tech industry.

The demand for careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is on the rise, and The E.S.T.E.A.M. Project is determined to empower black girls in these fields. This event is just one example of how Williams and her foundation are making a positive impact and paving the way for a more diverse and equal future in the tech industry.
