"You can't meet them without feeling a warmth and respect, and then realizing the enormity of the responsibility to do justice to this story," he shared.
Catherine also spoke about her preparation for the role of Jane Swire, and how she found inspiration in her research. She discovered that Jane had a fascination with the disintegration of aircrafts and the last moments of someone's life. "I kept that with me as I went into it," she explained. "From the information out there, I found that she had such dignity, grace, strength, and vulnerability."
The 12-week shoot posed some challenges for the actors as the scenes were not shot in chronological order. The story spans over three decades, and they had to adapt quickly to the different timelines. Colin joked that he would count the wrinkles on his face to figure out the year they were in, while Catherine created a "map" to help her navigate the jumps in time. Her tactic paid off, as she delivered a powerful performance in an early scene where her character counts to fifteen to demonstrate how long Flora may have been conscious.
Writer David Harrower initially considered removing the scene, thinking it may come across as "hokey." However, it has become a standout moment in the series. Colin added, "What was going on had us all slack-jawed, there was no acting required."
