February 5th 2025.
We recently had the opportunity to play an early version of WWE 2K25 and experience first-hand the improvements and new features that developer Visual Concepts has been working on. Despite last year's game receiving criticism, the future of WWE gaming looks bright with The Bloodline taking center stage.
From the moment we fired up our first match, it was clear that the gameplay had been enhanced. The action flowed smoothly and we were impressed by the little tweaks that made everything feel more exciting. The graphics were also sharp, with the addition of a new bruising, blood, and sweat system that added to the immersion.
One of the new features we were most excited to try out was the return of chain wrestling, which adds a fun element to certain one-on-one matches. We also got to experience the highly anticipated barricade dives, which did not disappoint. Tiptoeing along the barrier before jumping added an extra level of excitement and made the arena feel like a living and breathing representation of WWE.
The AI also felt smarter and the sliders used to determine how the AI plays as certain wrestlers have been extended this year. We were impressed by the weight detection, as smaller wrestlers struggled against bigger opponents. And speaking of weight classes, we were excited to see the addition of a new Giant weight class.
Another new feature this year is intergender wrestling, which allows superstars of either gender to face each other in every match. This opens up the possibility for dream matches and surprise Royal Rumble entrants. And for those who don't want to play it, the game allows for customization of run-ins to avoid unwanted intergender matches.
In terms of match types, we got to try out Showcase, Backstage Brawls, Royal Rumbles, and Underground matches. The two new Backstage Brawl areas, the WWE Archive and NXT Parking Lot, were particularly fun and brought a welcome hint of silliness to the game. The WWE Archive is full of Easter eggs, with nods to past legends and interactive objects that fans will love discovering.
The Showcase mode has also been rethought and focuses on The Bloodline, with the option to relive history, change it, or play out dream matches. We were impressed by the addition of Paul Heyman as the narrator, who adds a significant and authentic feel to the mode. Objectives in this mode keep the matches fun and allow for extra unlockables, with the introduction of timed objectives adding a new challenging element.
Overall, we were impressed by the early version of WWE 2K25 and are excited to see the final product. The game will be released on March 14, with deluxe editions launching a week earlier on March 7.
