A review of visiting the Lakes during the summer season.
Visiting the Lake District has always been a dream of mine, something that I would put on my bucket list. I mean, if it was enough to inspire the likes of Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth, it surely must be worth checking out. As a travel writer, I was excited to experience this popular tourist destination in the UK, known for its stunning views, charming boutiques, and endless outdoor activities.

As my travel companion and I made our way towards Lake Windermere, our home for the weekend was the Langdale Chase Hotel. We couldn't help but wonder what this storied retreat would be like. Would it have a grand entrance, a sweeping driveway, or a picturesque view of the lake? From the looks of their website, it seemed to have everything we were hoping for. But it wasn't until we saw the magnificent silhouette of a Victorian mansion that we truly appreciated the grandeur of this venue.

The Great Hall, with its impressive architecture and elegant decor, was the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail or simply relax with a good book. It was simply breath-taking. Built in 1890 for Edna Howarth, the widow of a successful businessman, this mansion was a true representation of the 19th-century Gothic Revival era. After undergoing a 12-month restoration, Langdale Chase reopened its doors in November last year, making it the perfect time for us to explore its revamped interiors and the surrounding region, famously described by Wordsworth as "the loveliest spot that man hath ever found."

Situated between Windermere and Ambleside, Langdale Chase is nestled in a four-and-a-half-acre property with plenty to see and do. We were especially drawn to the Summer Terrace, where we could sit and admire the passing kayakers, swimmers, and wildlife. We also took a tour of the gardens with the head gardener, Claire Farrington, who showed us around and shared her knowledge of the grounds.

Our room, the Low Wray Suite, was located in the main house and boasted a modern and cozy atmosphere. The marble ensuite bathroom was a luxurious touch, but it was the private veranda with a copper bathtub overlooking Lake Windermere that stole our hearts. We didn't want to leave. The other rooms, called "Fellside," were also lovely, but the lakeside rooms were definitely the ones to go for. And for an additional fee, you can even bring your furry friend along to stay in a pet-friendly room.

Foodies like us were in for a treat at Langdale Chase. With multiple dining options, including a fine dining experience in the modern restaurant, a more casual atmosphere in the lounge or bar, and even a private cellar for wine tastings, there was no shortage of delicious options. Executive Chef Michael Cole's innovative British cuisine had earned him two AA Rosettes, and we couldn't agree more. The evening fine dining menu was a culinary adventure, with familiar dishes presented in new and exciting ways. Our favorite was the sticky toffee pudding soufflé, a unique twist on a classic dessert.

On our second night, we opted for a more relaxed dining experience and indulged in some hearty meals. The tempura king prawns, cauliflower bhajis, and their signature 1807 Yorkshire Wagyu burger were all delicious and perfect for a cozy evening in. It's no wonder we couldn't resist coming back for more.

With so much to see and do in the Lake District, we were spoiled for choice. If you're looking to take things slow, a visit to Beatrix Potter's farmhouse, Hill Top, or Dove Cottage, once home to Wordsworth and his sister, Dorothy, are both must-see attractions. But we were in the mood for some outdoor activities, so we stopped by the "Boot Room" at Langdale Chase, which also serves as the reception area, to ask for some local recommendations. They provided us with walking maps for Loughrigg Fell and Orrest Head, both of which we tackled over the weekend. However, Loughrigg Fell won our hearts with its steady climb and incredible views, similar to Edinburgh's Arthur's Seat.

As a lover of rowing, I couldn't resist trying some of the water sports on offer in the Lakes. The hotel has partnered with Graythwaite Adventure to provide private outdoor experiences, including paddleboarding, canoeing, and 4x4 driving, just to name a few. And for those who prefer to stick to the water, you can use the hotel's jetty as your private launch pad.

Back on dry land, we were able to catch a movie in the hotel's dinky cinema and indulge in some help-yourself ice cream. And for wine lovers like us, the gorgeous cellar was the perfect spot for a wine tasting session.

Dating back to 1890, Langdale Chase has seen its fair share of history. And now, following in the footsteps of legendary writers and nature enthusiasts like Potter and Wordsworth has been a fascinating experience for me as well. The room rates start at £290 per night, including breakfast, and you can find more information on their website. Trust me, it's worth checking out.
