A physician was caught accepting a bribe.
In the district of Keonjhar, a medical superintendent at Sainkul Community Health Center was arrested by the Vigilance department on Friday. Dr. Ranjeeb Kumar Rout was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,800 from a CHC official. The bribe was allegedly for appointing the official's sister as a Yoga instructor at the health center, as well as clearing his pending salary bill. This incident was confirmed by the Vigilance directorate in a press release issued on Friday.

According to the press release, the complainant had been requesting the release of his salary, which was being withheld by Dr. Rout without any valid reason. Frustrated, the complainant reported the matter to the Odisha Vigilance on their toll-free number. The Vigilance directorate took immediate action, registering a case under Section-7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2018. A trap was laid and the accused doctor was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. The entire amount was recovered from his possession and seized.

In addition to this, the Vigilance also conducted search operations at three different locations to check for any disproportionate assets that the accused doctor may possess. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, the sarpanch of Brundabahal panchayat under Golamunda block in Kalahandi district, Dinesh Rout, was also arrested by the Vigilance department. It was alleged that he was carrying a large sum of money collected through unethical means.

The Vigilance officials caught him with unaccounted cash worth Rs 5.4 lakh while he was returning home from Golamunda block in his vehicle. They seized the vehicle and took him to Nabarangpur for further questioning. Two other teams also conducted raids at his house and another location. It is suspected that the amount was a bribe collected by Rout as a public servant from contractors who were working on various developmental projects in the panchayat area.

Such incidents of corruption in the healthcare and government sectors are a shameful and unfortunate reality. It is commendable that the Vigilance department is taking strict action against those involved in such unethical practices. It is important for the government to ensure that public servants are held accountable for their actions and that citizens can report such instances without fear. Only then can we truly eradicate corruption from our society.
