Last year marked the highly-anticipated return of the hit show Frasier, with its second season currently airing. After a successful 20-year run on our screens, another star has expressed interest in getting a spin-off for their character.
The original show was a spin-off from Cheers and centered around the uptight psychiatrist, Frasier, as he returns to Seattle and reconnects with his father, Martin Crane, and his equally particular brother, Niles. Premiering in 1993, the show also starred Jane Leeves and Peri Gilpin and ran for 11 seasons before Kelsey Grammer reprised his role in the Paramount+ reboot.
Following Jean Smart's revelation that she almost had her own spin-off for her character, Lana Gardner, Anders Keith, who plays David Crane in the revival, shared his desire for a spin-off as well. In an interview with Metro to celebrate the second season, he discussed his role as David and the comparisons to his on-screen parents, Niles and Daphne.
When asked if he would want a spin-off for his character, which could possibly be called "David," Keith enthusiastically responded, "Sure! Yeah, why not? I'm not going to say no to that." He also mentioned the potential for David's character, as a young man still figuring out his path and possibly following in the footsteps of his uncle, Frasier, or his parents. "There's lots of paths he could take, and we don't quite know that yet. I think it would be good," he added.
Speaking about what he would like to see from his character in a potential third season, Keith shared, "Obviously more physical comedy. I don't think we've seen David experiment yet. As a college student, you experiment with many things - maybe he joins a club, he tries a new hairstyle, tries growing a mustache, he goes to a party and realizes he's in over his head. I think that would be fun to see some part of him at school."
Keith also mentioned the possibility of Frasier coming to rescue David from a frat party or something similar, adding to the potential for physical comedy. As for his portrayal of David, some viewers have compared his comedic timing to that of David Hyde Pierce in the original run, something that Keith is flattered by. "I'm extremely flattered," he said. "It's nice company to be in."
When asked if either Hyde Pierce or Leeves had reached out to him about his role as their on-screen son, Keith mentioned that they hadn't, but he has spoken to them in the past and has not heard their thoughts on the revival yet.
The Frasier reboot picks up two decades after where the original show left off and has received positive feedback, with viewers comparing it to the original. Keith believes that sitcoms have a unique language that allows for things like complex physical comedy and lovable yet flawed characters. "We needed to do the original show right, and do all sitcoms right," he stated.
Frasier is currently available to stream on Paramount+. If you have a celebrity story or any videos or pictures to share, get in touch with the entertainment team at The Agency by emailing us, calling us, or visiting our Submit Stuff page - we'd love to hear from you.
