A Navy helicopter has gone down off Jervis Bay, situated around 150 kilometres south of Sydney, after what a witness described as an explosion occurring near its rotors.

ACT Police and rescue helicopters were lending their assistance to the Australian Defence Force in responding to the incident at approximately 9.10pm on Wednesday.

The ADF reported that all 10 personnel on the helicopter were accounted for, with two suffering minor injuries, differing from the initial report from paramedics of nine injured.

Michael, who has taken part in numerous military operations during his 20 years of living near the area, was fishing with his friends at Iluka Beach when the chopper went down.

"This particular operation was quite extraordinary," he told 9News.

"There were a few boats out there and two choppers and one was going up and down and then at one point, one of the helicopters, you could hear the rotors slowing down.

"Then, they revved up and there was this huge explosion near the rotors, and it just crashed into the water."

The ADF informed that the crew were engaging in the normal counter-terrorism training, which has been temporarily halted as a safety measure.

The fleet of MRH-90 Taipans, the aircraft involved, has been grounded while the crash, which happened near the HMAS Creswell training base, is investigated.
