Zelda is the best video game franchise ever, Cyberpunk 2077's success & PS2's HDMI capabilities discussed.
The debate over the greatest video game franchise ever is never ending. With Edge's list of the best games in the last 30 years, one thing is for sure: The Legend of Zelda is a clear contender. Super Mario 64, Doom, Halo, and Resident Evil 4 may be important games, but none of them can compare to the recent successes of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. This is a testament to the longevity of the franchise and its ability to consistently produce top-notch games.

Mario may be the only other franchise that can lay claim to having two games in the top 10. Ocarina of Time is a great example of the original Zelda formula, and its high ranking is well deserved. But with Zelda having four games in the top 100, it's hard to deny its status as the best video game franchise of all time.

However, not everyone can agree with the list. One reader in particular hated Breath of the Wild, citing the fragile weapons as a major issue. I can understand the sentiment. Weapons that degrade over time can be a real bummer, especially when it's done to the extent that it was in Breath of the Wild.

The debate over the best games in the last 30 years is ongoing, and different people will have different opinions. But one thing is for sure, Zelda is one of the most consistently great franchises out there. Kill Switch is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and that's a testament to its success and impact on the gaming industry.

Edge's list may be flawed, but it's clear that Zelda is one of the greatest video game franchises ever. And hopefully Bethesda will learn from their mistake of not sending review copies of Starfield to UK sites and treat them with the respect they deserve.
The Edge list of the best games in the last 30 years was certainly thought-provoking. It's difficult to please everyone with these types of lists, but I thought this was one of the better ones. It seemed to confuse 'best' with 'most influential' a lot of the time, and it's true that Super Mario 64 is incredibly important, but would anyone really want to play it over the more modern games?

That said, I can't really argue with Zelda: Breath Of The Wild being the best game ever. It's definitely one of the two best games around and it seems like the obvious choice when you're comparing different games and trying to say which one is the best. The best part of the list was the fact that two games from the Zelda series were in the top 10- Ocarina Of Time and Breath Of The Wild. This makes a solid case for Zelda being the best video game franchise of all time. After all, what other series has so many 10/10 games over a long period of time? The only other one is Mario, another Nintendo franchise.

Not everyone agrees with the list, however. I personally didn't like Breath Of The Wild, and I would rather have Bloodborne before Dark Souls and Elden Ring before the four games above it. There's no way that Halo: Combat Evolved is a better game than Elden Ring. Maybe it will prove to be more influential, but that remains to be seen.

We also celebrated the 20th anniversary of Kill Switch this year. I had a lot of fun with this game and I wanted to know if it was the first third person cover shooter game ever. It turns out that there are a few that came before it, such as WinBack on the N64, Cabal, Devastators, and even Space Invaders.

Finally, the new Pokémon show has made people wonder what would happen with a live action Pokémon movie. I personally think Detective Pikachu was a bad idea for a movie as it doesn't involve any of the gameplay and sets up the precedent of pokémon talking, which they usually can't. I think the movie makers have realised they've backed themselves into a corner, and I think their plan is to let people forget all about it and come back later with something that looks and works more like the games and anime.

I'm also disgusted by Bethesda's behaviour over the Starfield review copies not sent to UK sites. It's very obvious why they did it and the final Edge review being added to Metacritic makes it clear what they were trying to avoid. Some publishers withhold review copies sometimes, but this was so targeted that it's painfully obvious why it was done.
