YouTube is sending a clear warning to Candace Owens: her anti-trans videos may come at a cost. According to NBC News, the streaming platform has demonetized several videos on the conservative commentator’s channel for violating its monetization policies on hateful content. These violations stem from Owens’ misgendering or deadnaming of members of the trans community.
Although the policy isn’t publicly listed, YouTube released a statement noting that deliberately misgendering, or using pronouns not preferred by trans individuals, is a potential violation of its monetization policy. In response, Owens addressed the issue on The Candace Owens Podcast. She claims that YouTube offered her the option to delete every video she’s done pertaining to gender.
Google spokesperson Michael Aciman further clarified YouTube’s stance, saying that the videos hadn’t been removed, but rather blocked from monetization. The platform’s guidelines on hateful and derogatory content state that YouTube can block advertisements from running on videos that “promote discrimination, disparage, or humiliate an individual or group of people,” including disparagement of the LGBTQ community.
Owens wasn’t willing to back down, however. On her episode, “I Have An Announcement To Make,” she declared that she hadn’t misgendered anyone. She argued that if a person doesn’t feel like the gender they’re assigned that day, YouTube could punish her for properly gendering them. She concluded by saying that, on YouTube, “reality does not matter, people’s feelings about reality does, which is a shocking thing.”
Despite YouTube’s attempts to demonetize Owens’ channel, it appears that some sponsors are still backing her. Omaha Steaks and Birch Gold are just two of the companies that have continued to support her.
