Lucknow: On Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took a strong stand against the Samajwadi Party for defending its Maharashtra MLA Abu Azmi's praise for Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. During his speech in the UP Assembly, CM Yogi Adityanath criticized the Samajwadi Party for supporting Abu Azmi's comments about the Mughal invader.
He stated that those who see Aurangzeb as a hero have no place in our country and demanded that the SP expel him for his controversial remarks about the Mughal rulers. On a lighter note, he also joked, "Send Abu Azmi to Uttar Pradesh, we will take good care of him."
CM Yogi also reminded the SP of its ideological roots and invoked the name of socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia. "I would like to remind the members of the Samajwadi Party that even if they do not take pride in India's heritage, they should at least consider the ideas of the people whose names they use for their political agendas," he said.
He expressed his disappointment that the SP leaders now consider Aurangzeb as their role model instead of following the vision of Lohia. He demanded that Azmi be expelled from the party and sent to UP. "Once he is here, we will take care of the rest. A person who feels ashamed of the great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and praises Aurangzeb - does he have the right to live in India? The SP should answer this question," he added.
He also accused the SP of hypocrisy, pointing out that they criticize the Maha Kumbh but support a ruler who destroyed temples and suppressed India's faith. He questioned how the SP could not control such an MLA and demanded that they hold him accountable and show him the door.
Azmi's comments about Aurangzeb had sparked a lot of controversy, leading to an FIR against him and his suspension from the Maharashtra Assembly. However, Azmi defended himself, claiming that he was simply quoting historians and had no intention of hurting anyone's sentiments. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav also supported Azmi and opposed his suspension.
In a tweet, Yadav wrote, "If suspensions are influenced by ideology, then what is the difference between freedom of expression and slavery? Our MLAs and MPs possess unparalleled courage and wisdom. If some people think that suspending someone can silence the truth, then it shows their negative thinking."
CM Yogi also referred to historical records to highlight Aurangzeb's cruelty, even towards his own father, Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, whom he imprisoned at Agra Fort. "Shah Jahan longed for every drop of water. If the SP is proud of Aurangzeb, they should at least read the biography of Shah Jahan and understand his pain," he said.
He further questioned the SP's perspective, asking if they consider a ruthless, fanatical, and cruel ruler - who came to oppress India and attack its faith - as their ideal. Referring to Aurangzeb's imposition of the Jizya tax and forced conversions, CM Yogi added, "No civilized Muslim names their son Aurangzeb because they know that the name reflects the actions."
In conclusion, CM Yogi expressed his disappointment with the SP for forgetting the true essence of India's culture and heritage and urged them to reconsider their support for Azmi. IANS
