Workshop on Quality Coffee Production

Somwarpet, Aug. 17: An information workshop on quality coffee production was held at the Krishipattina Sahakari Sangha hall in Madapura, taluk, by the Somwarpet Extension Division of the Coffee Board.

Speaking at the program, Kodagu District Coffee Board Deputy Director Dr. Venkata Reddy said that it is hopeful for the growers that coffee has been getting good prices in the world for the last two years. Due to this, the area under coffee cultivation is expanding and production is increasing.

Only 40 percent of the coffee crop is consumed internally in the country, while the remaining 60 percent is exported. If pesticides are found in a bag of coffee exported abroad, the exported coffee will be returned. Therefore, growers should focus on quality coffee production. Pesticides should be stopped on coffee plants after October. He said that coffee farming should be done using technology.

Coffee Board Senior Liaison Officer Upendra Kumar said that the Coffee Board is providing 40% subsidy for setting up new coffee plantations, planting new rows of plants in old plantations, and purchasing machinery including sprinklers for irrigation. He said that all growers should make good use of this. Coffee Board Extension Officer Sangeetha said that the board is working with the motto of ‘Development of farmers, wealth of the country’. He said that all coffee growers should maintain close contact with the office and avail government schemes.

Coffee growers Maleyanda Joyappa and Bachinadanda Gandhi were present on the stage. On this occasion, more than 150 coffee growers registered their names for various schemes.
