A woman has been taken into custody by the Northamptonshire Police for questioning in connection with the death of a baby more than 40 years ago. The 57-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder earlier this week in Northampton and has since been questioned by detectives. This arrest comes after the discovery of a newborn girl's body in the town in May of 1982. It is believed that the baby was found strangled and wrapped in cloth near the Northampton railway station by a teenager who was taking a shortcut home.
The body of the baby girl was buried in Towcester Road Cemetery in November of 1982, but it wasn't until 2019 that she received a headstone, thanks to a campaign by a former local vicar as reported by the Northampton Chronicle & Echo. At the time of the baby's death, a major investigation was launched by the police, but unfortunately, no suspects were prosecuted and the case was eventually closed in 1993. However, in 2023, new evidence emerged during a cold case review by the Northamptonshire Police, leading to the recent arrest.
After being taken into custody, the suspect was released on bail on Thursday afternoon pending further inquiries. Detective Chief Inspector Johnny Campbell from the Major Crime Team of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit stated, "This has been an extremely complex investigation into events that happened more than four decades ago and a great deal of work has gone into getting us to this point."
He also expressed his gratitude to the dozens of officers from both Northamptonshire Police and their colleagues in the region who have been involved in the operation over the past 48 hours. However, he also made it clear that the inquiry is still ongoing and that the police will not be making any further comments at this time.
