Thursday evening saw a scary incident take place on Ilfracombe Harbour slipway in Devon. A group of four children were on the pier when a huge wave appeared, causing one of them to be swept away.
Thankfully, a member of the public was able to act quickly and retrieve a lifebuoy, while another managed to catch the girl before she was swept even further out to sea. Ilfracombe RNLI then came to the scene to provide casualty care to two of the children, taking them home afterwards.
Harbourmaster Georgina Carlo-Paat was very concerned by what had occurred, and commented: “This incident is a serious reminder of the dangers of tombstoning and other high-risk activities in the harbour.” It is a stark reminder for all of us to be careful and aware of the potential dangers of the sea.
