Tonee Lawson is on a mission to empower her community's youth with the skills they need for the future. As an entrepreneur in the tech industry, Lawson created The Be. Org to connect with the children of Baltimore and provide them with both STEM development and social enrichment to help them succeed.
When Lawson spoke to AfroTech, she discussed her journey to developing the youth-centered program. She noticed the lack of Black people in the spaces she was occupying professionally, leading her to create something that would make a systemic impact for generations to come.
“I didn’t have a relatable face or mentor,” said Lawson. “We know how important it is to start building a network at a young age and to be familiar with people in the industry, and I didn’t have that.”
The Be. Org seeks to be the answer for Baltimore youth to develop a plan to accomplish their career goals. Lawson hopes the program will provide a vital tool for children as they figure out their dreams, offering them a plan of action and support to help them achieve it. Through The Be. Org, Lawson has created opportunities for young people to build their workforce plan or life development plan early on.
On top of providing STEM education, Lawson has programs throughout the year to strengthen life and professional skills for students who need safe spaces to learn. Lawson encourages everyone in her community to join in the action, inspiring Black professionals to be a mentor to youth who need guidance from someone similar to them.
Lawson's vision is changing the trajectory of Baltimore and she wants supporters to stay in the know about all the latest programming The Be. Org has planned.
