It was a shock to residents of New York City when a woman was attacked by a shark at Rockaway Beach on Monday evening. The 50-year-old woman is now in a stable but serious condition at Jamaica Hospital, with a major injury that is not life-threatening.
When the woman was rescued from the water by lifeguards, she had a large part of her leg missing. In response to the attack, the New York City Parks and Recreation Department delayed the beach’s opening until 11am Tuesday and reminded New Yorkers that shark attacks are “extremely rare”.
Police and lifeguards rushed to the scene and applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg before she was taken to the hospital. The NYPD’s Technical Assistance Response Unit deployed a drone over the beach to investigate and the FDNY plans to deploy gadgets on the coastline today to continue the search.
The US is the “shark capital of the world” with 41 out of 57 shark attacks around the world happening in the country last year. Last year, up to five separate shark attacks were reported off the coast of Long Island, New York. Fortunately, none of the victims were seriously injured.
The woman remains in critical condition in hospital after the attack. We wish her a full and speedy recovery. Rockaway beach is now empty as authorities continue to search for sharks in the area.
