Mumbai was rocked by a shocking incident on October 13th when a woman and her friends were defrauded of ₹2.72 lakh by a con artist. The woman, Dr. Nikita Gadda, a lecturer in a popular private medical coaching institute in Pune, had contacted the accused, Bhavdeep Shah of Kandivali East through some acquaintances.
Dr. Gadda, who was preparing students for the NEET exam, wanted to watch the India-Pakistan match in the World Cup cricket tournament scheduled for October 14th with her friends. When she contacted the accused on September 5th, he assured her that he could arrange tickets for them at ₹15,000 apiece. He subsequently sent a soft copy of three tickets to the woman, which seemed authentic.
Encouraged by the authenticity of the tickets, the woman asked her friends if they were interested in purchasing tickets for the match. Five more people bought tickets from the accused, paying the money as asked. However, after the tickets did not arrive as promised, the accused started demanding additional money from the woman citing courier charges and fabricated taxes.
Realizing that she had been scammed, the woman reported the incident to the police and filed a complaint under section 420 of the IPC Act at Santa Nagar police station. The accused is still at large and the police are investigating the case.
