Why the LGBTQ+ community holds the Met Gala in such high esteem: it's all about glamour, drama, beauty, and magic.
The Met Gala is an event that holds a special place in the hearts of many in the LGBTQ+ community. It's a highly anticipated annual event that brings together fashion, art, and fundraising for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Dating back to 1948, the first Met Gala was a midnight dinner held in December, with a modest ticket price of $50. Fast forward to present day, and the entry fee has skyrocketed to a staggering $75,000 per ticket for the 2024 event.

This year's theme, 'The Garden of Time', is tied to the Met's upcoming spring exhibition, 'Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion'. The red carpet at the Met Gala is always a spectacle, with celebrities donning extravagant and eye-catching looks. It's not uncommon to see LGBTQ+ favourites like Lil Nas X, Troye Sivan, Kim Petras, and Hunter Schafer grace the red carpet, alongside the likes of Kim Kardashian, Timothée Chalamet, and Naomi Campbell.

Despite details being scarce about this year's event, we do know that the four co-chairs selected by Vogue's editor, Anna Wintour, are Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Zendaya. As with most red carpet events, the LGBTQ+ community is well-represented and eagerly awaits the fresh pop culture and meme-worthy moments, as well as the hidden messages behind the fashion choices.

For Robyn Electra, a 27-year-old transgender woman and founder of Gaff and Go, a lingerie and swimwear brand for trans individuals, the Met Gala is a must-watch event each year. She follows it religiously and loves to dissect the glamorous celebrity looks. "The Met Gala is regarded as the world's most prestigious and glamorous fashion event, bringing together the biggest names in show business," she tells The Agency. "I am a big fan of the Met Gala and I follow it every year. Every year's theme and fashion is different, with lots of celebrities on the red carpet showcasing glamorous and fabulous couture pieces."

As a trans woman, the Met Gala holds a special significance for Robyn. It reminds her of the show-stopping looks from RuPaul's Drag Race, a popular TV show among the LGBTQ+ community. Fashion is also a big part of Robyn's life, and she takes great care in selecting unique pieces to add to her collection. She believes that the right clothes can make a difference and even save lives. "Wearing tucking underwear that will tuck you properly when you are wearing a bodycon dress while in public will keep you safe and keep you out of harm's way, especially from people who are constantly attacking us trans women," she shares.

The LGBTQ+ community is known for its diverse, colourful, and proud members, and the Met Gala is a perfect platform to celebrate this. "We love the drama and eccentric fashion showcased on the red carpet," Robyn says. "We love the outgoing bold pieces and statement pieces worn by celebrities on the Met Gala red carpet, as it reminds us of how beautiful, bold and strong we are." She adds, "We love to express ourselves; we take care of our fashion and what we wear, and we do this with particular designs; we search what we wear with great care. And that is why the Met Gala is like an inspiration to us and it's the talk of the town, as it showcases to us fabulous and dramatic designs that greatly inspire us."

Each year, Robyn and her trans sisters host a party to watch the Met Gala and dissect all the looks on the runway. "We host our Trans Fashion Tea Party, where we sit together and spill the tea on the red carpet looks being worn by celebrities," she shares. "We take our time to analyse each individual piece and also scrutinise every aspect of these dresses by positively adding/suggesting alternatives as in how it could be styled differently, etc. We also talk about how we could improve certain fashion dresses on the red carpet so as to give the wearer that glamorous, chic look."

Similar to Robyn, John Bruce and Paulo Ribeiro, founders of PRM model agency, also tune in to the Met Gala each year. They describe it as one of the "greatest moments of the year in fashion." Their agency represents an array of LGBTQ+ models, refugees, and individuals over 40. "Paulo is always excited to see all the super models – especially Giselle Buchanan – and exactly what they're wearing," John shares. "He guesses which designer has dressed them and describes the event as 'Anna Wintour's day of the year'."

John adds, "She [Wintour] is such a powerful figure in our industry...what she represents and has done to our world at the helm of Vogue." The pair also love to predict the looks and designers that celebrities will choose for the event, as it can put a new designer on the map. They have even hosted parties in the past to celebrate the Met Gala and discuss the red carpet looks with friends. "It's even more fun having some champagne, and also helps to give us inspiration for fashion weeks, with some of the models judging and discussing the looks of everyone with a bunch of friends while dressing up," Paulo says.

For John and Paulo, the Met Gala is a combination of two worlds they are a part of – the LGBTQ+ community and the fashion industry. "Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga are massive icons for the LGBTQ+ community, so to see all of those incredible individuals on one night, in one place, all sharing the love for the entertainment industry in all its glitz and glamour is such a treat and highlight for us and a lot of our friends," Paulo says.

The Met Gala holds a special place in the hearts of many in the LGBTQ+ community, and it's not just about the glitz and glamour. It's about celebrating diversity, self-expression, and the power of fashion. As Robyn, John, and Paulo have shown, it's a night to come together with friends, have fun, and appreciate the artistry and creativity of the fashion world.
