I recently got a PS5 and four of its exclusives as a birthday present, and I'm thoroughly pleased with my purchase. The gaming industry has been rather strange since the end of the pandemic, with Nintendo being the only ones releasing any volume of first-party games.
The negativity surrounding Sony and Microsoft is unavoidable, with a lot of console war stuff amplified by the Activision Blizzard situation. There was also that awful PlayStation Showcase a few months ago, which gave me pause for thought as to whether I was making the right decision.
However, I decided to go ahead with my purchase. I've never really vibed with the Xbox and none of the current games appealed to me. I feel like I need to get into the next generation, so my choice was clear.
The quality of the games is amazing. I started with Astro's Playroom, which was a free game but a great introduction to the PlayStation 5 and a celebration of PlayStation in general. I played it for hours until I beat it, and it created a very positive first impression.
I then moved on to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which has the best graphics and best use of the SSD. The visuals are simply stunning and the graphics are practically flawless. Demon's Souls is also fantastic, though I haven't had a chance to play it for a substantial amount of time yet.
Returnal is super hard and I haven't played it a lot yet, but I like the eerie and cool atmosphere. Finally, there's God Of War Ragnarök, which isn't too different from the last game on the PlayStation 4, but the presentation and controls are great.
It's fashionable to be cynical and angry with gaming at the moment, and I understand why. But for me, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Until Sony's current situation starts to affect the games I can play, I don't really care.
