Whitney Dean is set for a sorrowful Christmas in EastEnders. Ever since she and Zack Hudson were accepted as foster parents, she has been looking forward to welcoming a child in need of care and little Ashton brought a lot of joy to her life.
But Zack was not connecting with the little lad very easily. After their daughter Peach was diagnosed with Edwards Syndrome and passed away, Whitney decided she couldn't put her body through pregnancy again - leaving Zack devastated. He had already been struggling with his HIV diagnosis, but had hoped they could have another baby together. Whitney was entirely against it, and so they moved out of number 1 and got their own flat so they could apply to be foster parents.
Christmas is still a difficult time for Whitney and Zack as they have to tell Ashton that he is moving to another foster family. Zack drowns his sorrows with Martin Fowler and Sonia Fowler tries to comfort Whitney, but with no success. Whitney even shows Sonia a photo of Ashton in his new home as she tries to accept him leaving.
Whitney seeks solace at Peach's tree at the allotment and meets Yolande Trueman who shares her own experiences with fostering. Yolande's heart to heart conversation leads Whitney to make a huge decision and she heads back to number 3B to tell Zack - but what could it be? With Whitney set to leave EastEnders in 2024, after Shona McGarty quit, could this decision be the start of her exit from the show?
