A shocking case has come to light in Chatham, Massachusetts, where an unnamed white teenager was indicted on charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. The incident occurred on July 19 when the 14-year-old allegedly attempted to drown a Black juvenile in a local pond.
Following the incident, the perpetrator had a Dangerousness Hearing in the Barnstable Juvenile Court on August 31. Judge Silvia Gomez found the defendant to be dangerous and ordered he be held without bail until the court date on September 13.
According to the Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert J. Galibois, the white teen threw a large stone at the Black juvenile, threatened him, and called him a racial slur. He then allegedly proceeded to pull the victim’s life jacket and push him underwater four or five times. The victim was said to have experienced difficulty breathing and was laughed at by the other white juvenile present at the scene.
The victim was able to be rescued only after he started yelling for help. Fortunately, a bystander responded and entered the water to help him to safety.
The case is an unfortunate reminder of the racial and ethnic bias that still prevails in society. It is a stark reminder of the hate crimes that have surged 11.6% in 2021. We must do more to eliminate racial and ethnic injustice and hatred in our society.
