After a week of scorching temperatures, the UK has cooled down and the mercury has been on the decline since last Saturday when highs of 32.7C were recorded at London's Heathrow Airport. That was the hottest day of the year so far, but now that we're heading towards autumn, many of us are wondering if we'll get another baking hot spell this month, or if this warm weather has been closed off until 2024.
Are we going to get another heatwave in 2023? According to the Met Office long-range forecast, it seems less likely. They project that we'll be in for rain and thundery showers next week as the warm air dissipates and a potential band of low pressure could make things quite unsettled. We can also expect temperatures to drop to around 19-20C in many places, although there is a chance of warm spells during sunnier intervals.
Moving into October, conditions may become more autumnal, although the Met Office has said there's an increased chance of some late season warm spells and above average temperatures. So while it's best to be prepared for cooler weather, don't get those fleeces and woolly tights out just yet!
It's been a mixed summer, but with temperatures peaking in both June and September, it's certainly been an interesting year for weather. We can only hope that the rest of 2023 will bring more warm weather our way and that we still have some sunshine in store! Share your views in the comments below.
