'Tis the season for festive films, and the latest hit to grace our screens is Emerald Fennell's black comedy, 'Saltburn', which landed on Amazon Prime just in time for Christmas.
Centering around a young Oxford student who joins his affluent friend's family for the summer at their estate, Saltburn, the movie is set in 2006 and features a star-studded cast including Barry Keoghan from Marvel, Jacob Elordi from Priscilla, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, and Carey Mulligan.
It's an obvious choice for Christmas viewing. However, many families have been caught off-guard by the quite graphic and 'weird' sex scenes, which leave some viewers in shock. MP Jess Phillips tweeted: "In other news, my son and I loved Saltburn and I'm stunned at how in a single generation we seem to have learned to cope with watching weird sex scenes across the parental child divide. Bravo @emeraldfennell it's hella weird."
Many people have shared their shock at watching the movie with their families. Anneliese Midgley shared, "I've literally just text a pal to say do not watch Saltburn with Mum's... It's an incredible film," whilst Sarah Chev shared, "I thought it was an absolute hoot but my partner hated it. No way I could have ever watched it with my parents though without absolutely melting."
It's clear that this film is not for family viewing and people are being warned against it by those who have seen it. Jae wrote, "DON'T WATCH SALTBURN TOGETHER AS A FAMILY," whilst K Dubbs warned, "If you are looking for a fun film to watch with your family on Christmas, don't accidentally put on #Saltburn Just trust me on this."
Ahead of the film's release, Emerald Fennell told The Agency: ‘We were all very, very dedicated to make something incredibly personal and unique and honest feeling, and in many ways, a lot of Saltburn is a little exposing or complicated. And I say that as the person who thought it in the first place! So if anyone should be asking any sort of questions about sanity, for example, they should leave them maybe at my door….’
Unfortunately, some fools chose to ignore the internet's warning and shared their mistake of watching the film with their families. Cecilia shared, "I disregarded the internet’s content warning and watched Saltburn with my parents… literally nothing could have prepared me that movie," whilst Shivali Best wrote, "Learned the hard way that Saltburn is most definitely not a family-friendly Christmas Eve movie." Apple Kaurr shared that they had willingly chosen to watch it with their family, but it had been 'turned off' and they had been 'told to go for a walk'.
So, this is your final warning not to watch it as a family. Saltburn is streaming now on Amazon Prime, but it is not for family viewing. If you're looking for a festive film to watch with your family this Christmas, it's probably best to avoid Saltburn!
