Police are currently investigating a hit and run incident in Wollongong that occurred over six weeks ago. The victim, Antonio Spano, was struck by a white ute at the intersection of Daisy Street and Princes Highway in Fairy Meadow at around 8:55pm. CCTV footage of the incident has been released in hopes of identifying the vehicle and assisting with the investigation.
The 57-year-old Spano suffered severe head and chest injuries and was immediately taken to the hospital in critical condition. Despite efforts to stabilize him, he was later transferred to Liverpool Hospital where he remains. The incident has left Spano with a brain injury that requires lifetime medical care, as his aunt Silvana Repaci sadly shared.
Spano, a caring and family-oriented man, was also a devoted son and nephew who provided care for his unwell mother. The hit and run has caused immense damage to their family unit, and they are pleading for anyone with information to come forward and give them some answers.
The authorities are urging anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident, or any information at all, to contact Wollongong Police Station or Crime Stoppers. Detective Chief Inspector Glen Broadhead of the Wollongong Police District expressed his concern for Spano and his family, stating that he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. He went on to say that the family deserves answers, and he hopes that the release of the new CCTV footage will jog someone's memory and encourage them to come forward with any information.
