This morning in southern California, a tragic accident occurred when a small plane crashed through the rooftop of a commercial building, resulting in two deaths and 18 injuries. According to Fullerton police spokesperson Kristy Wells, authorities received a report at 2:09pm local time about the crash, which took place in the Orange County city of Fullerton.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, where they were met with a blazing fire that had broken out. In order to keep everyone safe, nearby businesses were evacuated while firefighters and police worked together to battle the flames. The warehouse, which housed sewing machines and textiles, sustained damage from the fire. A sign on the door identified the building as belonging to Michael Nicholas Designs, a furniture upholstery manufacturer.
Out of the 18 injured, 10 were taken to the hospital for further treatment, while eight were treated and released at the scene. Sadly, two people lost their lives in the crash, as confirmed by Wells. It is still unclear whether the injured were passengers aboard the aircraft or individuals on the ground at the time of the incident.
According to Wells, authorities are still determining the type of plane involved in the crash. However, data from the flight-tracking website FlightAware revealed that a four-seat, single-engine aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff.
Security footage from a nearby wheel manufacturer, Rucci Forge, captured the moment of impact, showing a fiery explosion and a thick plume of black smoke as the plane appeared to dive towards the building, which was tilted on its side. The crash occurred near the Fullerton Municipal Airport, a small airport that primarily serves general aviation and is located about 10km from Disneyland. The airport has one runway and one heliport and is also close to a residential neighborhood and several commercial warehouse buildings.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time a plane has crashed near the Fullerton Municipal Airport. Last November, another four-seat plane made an emergency landing and ended up crashing into a tree just after takeoff. The Orange County Register reported that both individuals on board suffered moderate injuries.
Fullerton, a city with a population of approximately 140,000 people, is located 40km southeast of Los Angeles. As authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, the community is left mourning the loss of two lives and hoping for the full recovery of those injured.
