Rudy Giuliani is facing yet another loss. A federal judge has ruled in favor of two Black Georgia election workers from the 2020 presidential election in their defamation lawsuit against him. This comes after Giuliani had made false and defamatory statements about Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss.
Giuliani had argued that it had been difficult for him to keep up with his electronic records and thus, respond to subpoenas for information from Moss and Freeman as the case progressed. To this, U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell said, “Whatever the reason, obligations are case specific and withholding required discovery in this case has consequences.” Judge Howell further suggested that Freeman and Moss could try to show that Giuliani’s false claims were intentional, which may be beneficial to him during the damages trial.
Both election workers are seeking unspecified damages for the emotional and physical harm they have suffered, as well as damage to their reputations, as a result of Giuliani’s comments. In a statement, Freeman and Moss said it had been a “living nightmare” for them and that they had received a “wave of hatred and threats”. They said, “Nothing can restore all we lost, but today’s ruling is yet another neutral finding that has confirmed what we have known all along, that there was never any truth to any of the accusations about us and that we did nothing wrong. We were smeared for purely political reasons, and the people responsible can and should be held accountable.”
Giuliani has already been ordered to pay close to $90,000 in attorneys' fees to Freeman and Moss in the case. Judge Howell also said he may be hit with more fees. The women are seeking damages amounting to thousands, if not millions, of dollars. It remains to be seen how much the disgraced lawyer will have to pay as the case moves forward.
