Victoria Derbyshire opens up about having a miscarriage on a plane and continuing to work.
Victoria Derbyshire bravely shared the heartbreaking story of her miscarriage and how she continued working despite the traumatic experience. The 56-year-old BBC Newsnight presenter, who now has two sons with her husband Mark Sandell, opened up about the "very upsetting" incident during an episode of the Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast.

She recalled the moment she had the miscarriage on a plane and how she surprisingly felt "practical and pragmatic" about it. "Well, this is happening now and I'm going to work," she thought to herself. Looking back, Victoria admits that her miscarriage was one thing she couldn't talk about openly for a long time. "I'm usually a talker, but for about five years, I couldn't bring myself to speak about it. It was so odd," she shared.

Her sons, Oliver and Joe, are aware of their mother's miscarriage and often wonder what it would have been like to have a sister. "They fondly think about how life would have been with a sister," Victoria said. "They know what we would have named her and they would have loved to have a sister."

Victoria also revealed that she didn't give herself enough time to grieve after the miscarriage and instead kept herself busy. "I was happy to go through the pregnancy, eat loads of food, and put on weight. I loved it," she said. Despite being in her mid-50s and undergoing a mastectomy due to breast cancer, Victoria still has a desire to have another baby. "I feel like I could have a baby now, isn't that mad? I love being the mom of a newborn," she shared.

For anyone going through a similar experience, Victoria wants to remind them that they're not alone and that there is support available. She encourages anyone in need of emotional support to reach out to the Miscarriage Association's pregnancy loss helpline or send an email. The helpline number is 01924 200799 and the email is [email protected].
