I can't believe I have my local Blockbuster to thank for my discovery of the 2001 horror slasher Valentine. It's one of those films that I probably wouldn't have found on my own, but my horror senses were tingling and I just knew I had to unearth it. And let me tell you, the day that I found out I wasn't alone in my love for Valentine was a good day.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that there are dozens of Reddit threads dedicated to discussing this silly yet thrilling horror flick. And it's not just the star-studded cast that's worth mentioning – although let's be real, with names like David Boreanaz, Denise Richards, and Katherine Heigl, it's hard not to be impressed. But there's so much more to this slasher than meets the eye.
Directed by Jamie Blanks, Valentine follows a group of childhood friends who are faced with their biggest challenge yet when a Cupid-masked serial killer starts targeting them. But the story goes even deeper, back to their high school days when a young boy named Jeremy was falsely accused of sexual assault by Dorothy, one of their own friends. As the group starts getting picked off one by one, they have to consider whether their past actions have come back to haunt them, or if someone else has developed a vendetta against them.
As far as slasher films go, Valentine hits all the marks. Heart-stopping chase scenes, creative kills, a creepy killer in a cherub mask, and a twist that will leave you on the edge of your seat. And let's not forget Denise Richards' iconic hot tub scene – talk about terrifying.
But where the film falls short is in the character development of the friendship group. Let's be honest, most of them are pretty insufferable. Sure, Adam (aka Jeremy) isn't exactly a model citizen, being a serial killer and all, but it's hard to root for the friends when they made up such a terrible lie that ruined a young boy's life. The only one who seems to have any redeeming qualities is Kate, who was kind and polite in her rejection of Jeremy all those years ago. And as a result, he spares her life. It's just a shame that the rest of the group didn't get the same treatment.
But don't let that stop you from watching Valentine. It's a perfectly thrilling slasher that has aged surprisingly well, especially compared to some of the other horror films that have come out over the years. And let's not forget the injustice of its 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – this film deserves so much more recognition.
If you're in the mood for a good scare, Valentine is available to buy or rent on various streaming platforms. And if you have any celebrity stories, videos, or pictures, feel free to share them with us – we'd love to hear from you.
