UNC increases financial aid to students in response to Supreme Court ruling.
In response to the Supreme Court's 6-3 decision, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has expanded its financial aid packages. According to Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz, the university will comply with the court's ruling and will no longer consider race a factor when making admissions decisions.

To increase the diversity of its enrollment, the university will provide free tuition to more low and middle-income families. This is a race-neutral policy that is meant to broaden the ethnicity of the university's admitted applicants. Guskiewicz stated that those families making less than $80,000 a year will have their tuition covered starting in 2024.

However, there are already attempts to challenge these policies in lower courts. One particular case in Virginia's U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit was brought forth by a conservative, single-issue advocacy group called Coalition for TJ. They argued that the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology's revised admissions process unfairly discriminated against Asian-American students.

Judge Robert King disagreed with the group's lack of evidence. In his opinion, he stated that Asian American applicants to TJ enjoy far greater success in securing admission than any other racial or ethnic group. He also added that the Coalition's efforts to prove a disproportionate, adverse impact on Asian American students "fall flat." He concluded that the Board's aim to expand access and enhance diversity does not constitute intentional racial discrimination against Asian American students.
