On Sunday, there was an increased police presence in the area due to a tragic incident on Queens Drive in Liverpool. Two people were found inside a black Mercedes Class 180 that had driven into a flooded section of the road. Despite the best efforts of the passing members of the public, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Services, and officers from Merseyside Police, the individuals were pronounced dead when they arrived at the hospital.
Met Office data revealed that the area had experienced extremely heavy rain, with more than 32mm of rainfall per hour the day before. Detective Chief Inspector Mike Dalton expressed his condolences to the family and asked that anyone with relevant information come forward.
"Our thoughts go out to the family of the man and woman who sadly lost their lives in this tragic incident, despite the best efforts of passing members of the public, our officers and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Services at the scene," Chief Inspector Dalton said.
He also asked for anyone who had seen the accident, stopped to try and help, or had any dashcam footage from their car to come forward. Similarly, he asked any local residents who had any doorbell or CCTV footage from the night to submit it to the police. The road closures in the area remain in place as the investigation continues, and motorists are asked to avoid the area.
Anyone who believes they can help is asked to contact Merseyside Police Contact Centre on Twitter or Facebook, quoting reference 23000807137.
