Two hikers were rescued by emergency services over the weekend after becoming lost on a trail near Alice Springs. One hiker was reported missing by their partner at 9:30pm on Saturday while walking along the Larapinta Trail. The 33-year-old man had planned to hike to Millers Flat via a different route than the main trail. Unfortunately, his phone battery died and he lost contact with his partner at 1pm.
After receiving the report, police, along with rescue crews and volunteers, launched an extensive search covering 134 square kilometers. Finally, on Sunday at 9am, a helicopter spotted the missing hiker and he was safely transported to Alice Springs Hospital. Fortunately, he was released shortly after receiving initial first aid for dehydration.
Meanwhile, another hiker, a 40-year-old woman, was reported missing from the same trail at 5pm. She had set out to solo walk from Simpsons Gap to Standley Chasm but ran out of water and became dehydrated. She activated her Personal Locater Beacon and a rescue helicopter was sent to her location around 6:40pm. Luckily, she only suffered mild dehydration and did not need medical attention.
Acting Sergeant Chris Grotherr, the search coordinator, advised anyone planning to hike on the Larapinta Trail to consider going in a group or at least with one other person. He also emphasized the importance of being prepared with enough supplies, especially water, and carrying a Personal Locater Beacon. He noted that the second hiker in this case was found much quicker because she had a beacon with her.
Thanks to the collaborative efforts of multiple agencies, the first missing hiker was located and rescued quickly. However, it could have been even faster if he had a Personal Locater Beacon with him. Let this serve as a reminder to always be prepared and take necessary precautions when venturing into the wilderness.
