Stephen Mulhern, a well-known TV presenter, recently opened up about a unique aspect of his teenage years. As a young man, he spent his time on the lookout for police to protect his father. Stephen, now 47, started his career in the entertainment industry by hosting children's shows such as Finger Tips and Tricky TV. Over the years, he has also presented popular shows like Britain's Got More Talent, Deal or No Deal, Catchphrase, and Dancing on Ice.
But before his successful TV career, Stephen's early years were spent helping his father, who was a market trader in East London. His parents' job involved some risk of getting in trouble with the authorities, which meant that Stephen and his brothers had to keep an eye out for any approaching authorities. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Stephen compared his role to that of Derek 'Del Boy' Trotter and his brother Rodney in the TV series Only Fools and Horses. He humorously mentioned how he and his brothers would be on the lookout for police while their father sold novelty toys and vegetable choppers at the crack of dawn.
Working with his father also taught Stephen some valuable lessons, especially when it came to performing in front of a tough audience. He said, "Dad would let me have a go on the stall, and that's where I learned how to perform in front of the hardest kind of audience: real people." Magic has always been a significant part of Stephen's life, and he became fascinated with it at the young age of 11. He even went on to become a Redcoat entertainer at Butlin's in Somerset when he was just 17.
However, Stephen is quick to clarify that he didn't get into magic to be cool. He was simply captivated by the art form and continued to hone his skills throughout his career. In fact, he always carries a deck of cards with him and loves to surprise fans who stop him for a chat or a selfie. "Other kids watched Match of the Day and got into football, I watched Paul Daniels and decided to learn magic. And it was the magic that led me to be a Redcoat at Butlin's. It gave me a career," he shared.
After leaving school, Stephen created his magic show and won a TV talent show hosted by Jonathan Ross in 1997. This led to him being invited to perform at the prestigious Royal Variety Performance at the Victoria Palace Theatre. His show, The Quick Trick Show, aired on TV from 1999 to 2004 and featured magic tricks, pranks, and step-by-step guides to performing illusions.
Today, Stephen is a household name, known for hosting popular shows like Deal or No Deal, Catchphrase, and Dancing on Ice. These shows are now available for streaming on ITVX.
