Tulsa's B.S. Roberts Park is now owned by a Black family, a historic move.
The Historic Greenwood District Main Street recently celebrated an incredible milestone - the purchase of the B.S. Roberts Park, the first Black-owned property in Greenwood in over 50 years. This momentous occasion was marked with celebrations including music, food, and games at the park.

Bill White, executive director of the Historic Greenwood District Main Street, expressed his joy in a written statement, saying, "We are thrilled to announce the acquisition of B.S Roberts Park. This park is a vital part of the Greenwood District’s history, and we are committed to preserving it for future generations. We believe that this acquisition will help to revitalize the Greenwood District and create a brighter future for our community."

The property is set to undergo renovations to recreate its original character, while also updating it with modern amenities to make it more accessible.

Vanessa Hall-Harper, District 1 City Councilor, highlighted the importance of the land, saying, "The land that we are standing on is sacred because the blood of Africans living in America in 1921 was shed, homes and businesses were looted and burned to the ground by a racist white mob and supported by racist local and state officials. So, we honor those who lost their lives, their homes, their businesses, the generational wealth that the Greenwood community cannot appreciate like that of our white affluent communities who were not massacred."

The new ownership of B.S Roberts Park will allow the residents of Greenwood to be more involved in decisions regarding the area and its future. White said, "This is an important step as the residents of the Greenwood community rarely get to be included in decisions about the area. This gives them a chance to be a part of what happens in the park."

The acquisition of the B.S Roberts Park symbolizes an incredible opportunity for the Black community to rebuild and create a brighter future. The park will not only serve as a reminder of the Tulsa Race Massacre, but also as a testament to the resilience of the Greenwood community.
