Google Maps recently renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, a change that was quickly noticed by President Donald Trump. He took to his Truth Social platform to brag about the change, calling it "GULF OF AMERICA!" and sharing a screenshot of the updated name on Google Maps.
This change was made on Monday, following an executive order signed by Trump to rename the oceanic basin that is mostly surrounded by Mexico and the US. Interestingly, a Google search for Gulf of Mexico now also yields results for Gulf of America.
When questioned about the name change, Google stated that it follows a long-standing practice of updating names according to official government sources. However, the change will only be visible to users in the US, as users in Mexico will still see the original name, and those in the rest of the world will see it as "Gulf of Mexico."
In a blog post, Google explained that the name change was rolled out because the Geographic Names Information System had officially updated the name. This is not the only change that Google has made to its platforms, as the Google Calendar no longer includes important cultural events such as Black History Month, Pride Month, Women's History Month, Indigenous People Month, Jewish Heritage, Hispanic Heritage, or Holocaust Remembrance Day.
A Google spokesperson shared that the Calendar team had previously manually added a broader set of cultural moments from various countries around the world. However, they received feedback that some events and countries were still missing. As a result, Google decided to discontinue manually updating these events and instead focus on maintaining hundreds of moments consistently and globally.
