The Supreme Court granted interim relief to transporters in Madhya Pradesh on Monday, allowing them to continue offering services to the MP Civil Supplies Corporation until further notice. This comes as a result of a petition filed against the High Court of Madhya Pradesh Jabalpur bench, which had given the green signal to the implementation of the Chief Minister Yuva Annadoot Yojana on July 31, 2023.
The transporters involved in transporting food grains from warehouses to fair price shops were granted contracts in 2021, valid until 2024. In January 2023, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Chief Minister of the state, announced the CM Yuva Annadoot Yojana, which led to the termination of all the contracts. They were, instead, handed over to domicile residents at the Janpad Panchayat level through a lottery system.
In March-April 2023, the contractors took their grievances to the High Court, with the single bench at Jabalpur, Indore and Gwalior granting interim relief. This allowed the transporters to continue their contracts without being affected by the implementation of the CM Yuva Annadoot Yojana. However, the division bench dismissed all the 50+ writ petitions on July 31, 2023, giving a green signal to the scheme.
As a result, the previously authorized contractors approached the Supreme Court, which heard the special leave petitions on Monday. Advocate Siddharth R Gupta, who appeared on behalf of the transporters, said, “The SC has permitted them to continue transporting food material till further orders. The court issued a show cause notice to the state government to respond on the validity of the scheme within 6 weeks.”
The MPCSL runs 27,000 pair price shops in the state, with food materials transported from warehouses to fair price shops. Meanwhile, a 25-km-long 'Har Ghar Tiranga' rally lit up the streets of Bhopal and Indore with patriotism.
