Mumbai was thrown into a state of disarray on Friday as commuters faced significant disruptions on local trains due to a technical issue at Virar station's railway yard. The signalling cables and rendering points at the station became non-functional, severely impacting services between Virar and Vaitarna section. According to the Western Railway spokesperson, around 10 mail express trains and 20 local trains had been delayed by 8-10 minutes till 9.40 pm. However, passengers on the Virar-bound fast local reported waiting times of more than 30 minutes. Jayesh Sharma, a 32-year-old accountant from South Mumbai, usually takes the 7.05 pm Virar-bound fast local from Churchgate. On Friday, he had to wait until 8.50 pm to reach Nallasopara, 30 minutes later than the usual arrival time. Other commuters also confirmed that their trains ran more than 20 minutes behind the schedule.
The Central Railway also suffered disruption due to a signal failure between Umbermali and Kasara. The failure occurred around 9.15 am, causing delays of 10-15 minutes on the Kasara-CSMT route. The issue was resolved by 10.15 am, but the disruption had a compounding effect which lasted until the afternoon. Adding to the misery, more than a dozen long-distance trains passing through the suburban section were also late. This further hampered the schedule of local trains.
The situation was not any better for BEST bus commuters, who were forced to contend with numerous inconveniences due to traffic diversions on various bus routes.
