Indore: Tomato lovers are in for a surprise as their favorite fast food restaurants, such as McDonald’s and Burger King, will no longer be including the tangy vegetable in their bun-based meals.
The cause of the change is the rocketing price of tomatoes in retail markets. Just a few months ago, tomatoes were sold for a reasonable Rs 30 per kilogram, but now the cost has jumped to an astonishing Rs 180 per kilogram. With the onset of the monsoon season, families across India are dealing with the burden of high prices for essential fruits and vegetables.
Simple Verma, a housewife from Aerodrome Road, said, “High or low, we still need to eat. We’ve just had to adjust to the price hike by using less tomato in our meals.”
Anju Solanki, a housewife from Tilak Nagar, commented, “We’re not happy about the high prices, but it hasn’t stopped us from getting the nutrition we need.”
Ginger is the commodity that’s been hit the hardest by the price hike. It has gone from costing Rs 150 per kilogram to Rs 240 per kilogram. Onions have also seen a significant jump, from Rs 8 per kilogram to Rs 18 per kilogram.
Tomatoes and ginger have seen the most dramatic increase in price, and this has caused a decline in sales for outside merchants. Prices in Choithram Mandi, however, have remained mostly consistent.
Families across India are struggling to keep up with the sudden price hikes of essential fruits and vegetables. The monsoon season has brought with it a considerable amount of financial strain for many households.
