Three former Chief Ministers are ready to start their political careers in the Lok Sabha.
In a recent development, three former Chief Ministers from Karnataka, namely Basavaraj Bommai, Jagadish Shettar, and H D Kumaraswamy, have joined the ranks of their predecessors who have delved into national politics by emerging victorious in the Lok Sabha elections.

Both Bommai and Shettar, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, will be serving their first term as Members of Parliament, while Kumaraswamy, the Janata Dal state president and son of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, has previously held a seat in the parliament.

The Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka saw the BJP contesting in 25 out of the total 28 seats, while the Janata Dal, which joined the National Democratic Alliance in September last year, contested in three seats.

It is noteworthy that out of the 23 individuals who have served as Chief Ministers of Karnataka since 1947, 14 of them have also held a seat in the Lok Sabha, with two serving in the Rajya Sabha.

Seven former Chief Ministers, namely K C Reddy, Kengal Hanumanthaiah, Veerendra Patil, Gundu Rao, S Bangarappa, Veerappa Moily, and B S Yediyurappa, have transitioned to national politics by becoming Members of Parliament after completing their tenure.

On the other hand, an equal number of Chief Ministers, including S Nijalingappa, H D Deve Gowda, J H Patel, S M Krishna, N Dharam Singh, H D Kumaraswamy, and D V Sadananda Gowda, have assumed their role as Chief Minister after serving as Members of Parliament.

Bommai's father, S R Bommai, and Ramakrishna Hegde have represented Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha during their tenure as Chief Ministers.

Meanwhile, Kadidal Manjappa, B D Jatti, S R Kanthi, Devraj Urs, and the incumbent Siddaramaiah have refrained from participating in national politics.

Basavaraj Bommai, who was the Chief Minister from July 2021 to May 2023, has been elected as the Member of Parliament from the Haveri constituency. Similarly, Shettar, who secured a victory from the Belgaum seat, had previously served as the Chief Minister from July 2012 to May 2013.

Kumaraswamy, who has emerged victorious in the Mandya constituency, has served as the Chief Minister twice, first from May 2018 to July 2019, and then from February 2006 to October 2007. Interestingly, he entered the political arena by successfully contesting the Kanakapura Lok Sabha seat in 1996, and later in 2009, he won the Lok Sabha elections from Bangalore Rural.
