The highly anticipated debut of Horizon on television has unfortunately hit a roadblock. It seems that Netflix has decided to part ways with the show's creative lead, putting the live action version of the popular video game in jeopardy.
It's no secret that Hollywood is now showing great interest in video game companies, with Sony being at the forefront in terms of live action projects. The success of adaptations like Uncharted, Twisted Metal, and the critically acclaimed The Last Of Us has not gone unnoticed, making it almost inevitable for Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War to receive their own adaptations as well. However, it's quite surprising that these projects will be coming to us in the form of a TV show rather than a movie.
Unfortunately, it seems that the much-anticipated Horizon TV show is no longer happening. This is due to the controversy surrounding its would-be showrunner, Steve Blackman, who is best known for his work on The Umbrella Academy. Reports of toxic working conditions and inappropriate behavior have led to Blackman's downfall, ultimately resulting in the indefinite cancellation of the Horizon show.
According to Rolling Stone reporter Cheyenne Roundtree, Blackman has been removed from not only Horizon, but also another original show at Netflix called Orbital. This news was confirmed in a tweet from Roundtree on July 3, 2024.
While there is a possibility that the Horizon show could be revived with a different creative team, Roundtree's description of the situation as "no longer moving forward" suggests otherwise.
The decision to make Horizon into a TV show instead of a movie may seem random and arbitrary, especially considering the need for a large budget and advanced special effects in order to bring the game's post-apocalyptic world of giant robot animals to life. However, this may have been a strategic move on the part of Sony Pictures, as it is likely easier for them to share the cost with a TV provider rather than negotiate with a fellow movie studio.
Despite this setback, Sony is still heavily invested in the Horizon franchise. A spin-off has already been released for the PlayStation VR2, and a Lego game is set to come out later this year, with plans for it to also be available on the Nintendo Switch. Fans can also expect a third mainline entry in the series, as well as rumors of a multiplayer spin-off and even a possible MMO.
While the games have been successful, some critics argue that they lack in storytelling, especially following the departure of Lance Reddick, who played the character Sylens. In this sense, a live action adaptation could greatly benefit the franchise by improving the narrative aspect of the series.
With so much buzz surrounding the Horizon franchise, it's safe to assume that Sony will continue to push for a live action adaptation in the future. In the meantime, fans can still enjoy the various games and spin-offs that are currently available. And who knows, maybe one day we will see a Horizon movie on the big screen. Only time will tell.
