Is Sony truly deserving of its current success? As a long-time fan of the PlayStation, I find myself feeling frustrated and conflicted upon hearing about their recent financial success. Despite releasing only a handful of games, Sony seems to be thriving. As someone who has been a loyal PlayStation supporter since the beginning, I've always held the console in high regard, even above Nintendo and Xbox. However, lately I've started to question my unwavering loyalty and wonder if I've been missing out on something.
In the past, I may have been labeled a "console warrior," but as I've grown older, I like to think I've become more open-minded. I would have no problem purchasing an Xbox if there was a valid reason to do so, but as of now, I have yet to find one. Games like Sunset Overdrive and Gears 5 may be great, but they are not enough to entice me to spend hundreds of dollars on a new console. Even upcoming releases like Halo Infinite and Starfield do not seem like system sellers to me.
This lack of exclusives has always been the Xbox's downfall, and it seems irrelevant now as they have essentially become a third-party platform. Meanwhile, Sony continues to dominate the market, and it's easy to see why. Their lack of competition has allowed them to become complacent and lazy, as evidenced by their sudden shift towards live service games and a lack of new announcements.
But despite their lack of effort, Sony still managed to outsell themselves from the previous year. This success is not due to any innovative or groundbreaking actions on their part, but rather because there was simply no other choice. Xbox console sales are down, and the Nintendo Switch, while popular, can never compete as a primary console. Sony has essentially become the only choice, and that is not good for anyone.
As a die-hard PlayStation fan, I can't help but feel disappointed and worried about the future. It's clear that Sony's success is not due to their own efforts, but rather the mistakes of their competitors. This type of success is not sustainable and does not bode well for the industry as a whole. I can only hope that Sony will learn from this and strive to do better in the future. But for now, I can't help but feel uneasy about the current state of the gaming market.
