The Studio Museum in Harlem has a new program called 'Arts Leadership Praxis' for professional development.
The Studio Museum in Harlem is excited to announce the launch of their Arts Leadership Praxis, a six-month program dedicated to empowering professionals of color and those who are passionate about highlighting Black cultural narratives. In a recent press release, the museum described the groundbreaking initiative as a supportive and inclusive opportunity for early- to mid-career individuals to advance in their fields and build a strong community. This program is a testament to the museum's unwavering dedication to addressing systemic inequities within the arts industry.

Thelma Golden, director and chief curator of the Studio Museum, expressed her pride in the museum's commitment to identifying and fulfilling educational and programmatic needs in the arts. She also noted the significance of this program, coming on the heels of the CCL/Studio Museum in Harlem Curators' Forum, as a response to the lack of representation of people of color in museum leadership positions across the country.

The Arts Leadership Praxis is a natural extension of the Studio Museum Institute, which offers a variety of opportunities such as internships, fellowships, and professional seminars. This particular program is designed to support professionals with five to seven years of experience in curatorial, education, or public programming roles. The 2024 cohort, which consists of eight highly accomplished individuals from New York, was selected through a rigorous nomination and application process. The inaugural participants include Deja Belardo, Meredith Breech, Carla Forbes, Margarita Lila Rosa, Jenée-Daria Strand, Tsige Tafesse, Gee Wesley, and Imani Williford.

We are proud to introduce the first class of Arts Leadership Praxis and welcome these talented curators to the program! The museum shared a photo of the cohort, taken by Naima Green, on their social media platforms. In the coming years, the program aims to expand its reach nationwide and provide opportunities for a diverse group of visionaries to shape its landscape.

Since its inception in January, the group has been fully immersed in a variety of enriching experiences. They have engaged in thought-provoking discussions with esteemed curators, traveled to Los Angeles to connect with different arts organizations, visited the studios of renowned artists, and participated in intensive workshops. As the first Arts Leadership Praxis program, which is partially funded by the Ford Foundation, draws to a close in June 2024, the participants will have the opportunity to network with esteemed alumni of the Studio Museum Institute.

The Studio Museum in Harlem is thrilled to see the impact that the Arts Leadership Praxis will have in the years to come, as it continues to empower and support talented professionals of color in the arts industry.
