The government of Odisha has launched a new initiative called Sahajog on Thursday, aimed at providing better access to government welfare schemes for the urban poor. The program was officially inaugurated by Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra in Bhubaneswar.
The main objective of Sahajog is to ensure that the benefits of government schemes reach the last mile and reach the eligible beneficiaries in urban poor communities. This will be achieved through various measures such as awareness campaigns, doorstep delivery of services, and strengthening of implementation mechanisms at the Urban Local Body and district levels, as explained by officials.
The program will start with providing housing support to eligible families under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, which will serve as the entry point for delivering other benefits. Minister Mahapatra emphasized that Sahajog will be run as a mass movement from May 1 to June 20, with the aim of reaching a large number of people.
He also announced that coordination committees will be formed by eight district collectors and a mobile app will be developed to directly connect eligible beneficiaries to the schemes. The program will initially cover urban areas and then be extended to rural beneficiaries in the future.
Minister Mahapatra revealed that the first phase of the program will cover over 15 lakh people across 44 Urban Local Bodies in eight districts, namely Khurda, Cuttack, Ganjam, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Bhadrak. Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary of the Housing and Urban Development department, added that the department will function as the nodal agency for the initiative and will work towards fulfilling the basic needs of the economically weaker sections, such as land, house, water, and electricity.
