After 29 year of being off the air, Bullseye could be making a return to our TV screens. The iconic 1980s programme was first cancelled in 1995, but now TV bosses are reportedly looking to bring it back with Paddy McGuinness fronting the reboot.
The potential revival has been credited to 16-year-old darts sensation Luke Littler, who's become an overnight sensation and has the nation hooked on the game again. His match against Luke Humphries at Alexandra Palace this week drew in 4.5 million viewers, and had everyone on the edge of their seats.
An insider told The Sun that ITV is already in talks to bring back Bullseye after the final's highest ever viewership.
‘It’s early days, but ITV thinks it could be hugely successful. There are even plans to bring back the speedboat top prize — even if contestants live in a landlocked place, which often happened during Bullseye’s heyday.’
When it comes to a host, it's believed that 50-year-old Paddy McGuinness, who has Lancashire roots like the late Jim Bowen, would be perfect for the job.
Bullseye first aired in 1981 and ran for 14 years. The darts-based quiz game tested contestant's general knowledge as well as their dart skills, and they could win cars and caravans for their efforts. Of course, the show also had a number of memorable catchphrases, such as ‘You can’t beat a bit of Bully!’ and ‘Super, smashing, great!’
The show was briefly revived in 2006, however it was short lived and scrapped after two series. Former English darts player Wayne Markle even hit out at the idea of Bullseye returning, saying that ‘they should have let the show die.’
With Luke Littler breathing fresh life into the game, the nation is now hooked and many will be excited to hear the news that Bullseye could make a comeback. However, only time will tell if the show will actually make its return. ITV has been contacted for comment.
