The Postal service in India

The Indian postal service is one of the largest in the world. It provides a range of services to customers, including normal mail, speed post, registered mail, and courier. The Postal service in India is one of the oldest and most profitable organizations in the country.

It was during the time when the British ruled over India that this postal service was formed to help in connecting people with each other and to provide them with a means of communication. The postal service helped connect people who were unable to read or write and had no access to other means of communication.

The Indian postal system is a public sector undertaking of the Government of India. It includes both the postal administration and the post office. The Indian Postal Service has been a part of the Department of Posts, which comes under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, since 1947.

The first mail service in India was established in 1837 from Bombay to Thane. The service was extended to Madras (Chennai) in 1854, Calcutta (Kolkata) in 1857, and finally to Delhi in 1911. During World War I, an airmail service was started between Karachi and Bombay; it was discontinued after the war due to heavy losses incurred by German aircraft attacks on British ships near Karachi harbor during World War II.

The Indian Postal Service is one of the largest government-owned organizations providing e-commerce services among all postal services worldwide with over 1 billion registered electronic money accounts which are called "e-Post Office Savings Bank accounts".
