On a peaceful Sunday evening at Aberavon Beach in Wales, a scary incident occurred that put the lives of six young children in danger. They had gotten into "serious difficulty" while playing in the water and were struggling to make it back to shore. The Coastguards immediately sprang into action and were deployed to the beach at around 8.30pm, after receiving reports of the children's distress.
The situation was described as a "mass casualty" rescue, which prompted the dispatch of police, ambulances, and local volunteers to the scene. The rescue teams worked together to save the children, with three being pulled to safety using a throw line and the rest being rescued from the water. Thankfully, all six of them were successfully rescued, with two of them being taken to the hospital and the other four making their own way there.
In a statement, a spokesperson from HM Coastguard shared, "HM Coastguard was tasked to co-ordinate the rescue of children in the water at Aberavon Beach yesterday, at around 8.30pm. We were joined by the Port Talbot RNLI Lifeboat, Port Talbot and Porthcawl Coastguard Rescue Teams, Welsh Ambulance Service, and South Wales Police at the scene. The Port Talbot Coastguard Rescue Team quickly sprang into action, rescuing the children from the water and providing first aid until the ambulance arrived."
As of now, the current condition of the children is not known. Welsh Ambulance Service shared that two of the patients were taken to the hospital for treatment, while the other four made their own way there. This incident serves as a reminder of the bravery and quick response of these rescue teams, who put their own lives at risk to save others.
The Port Talbot Coastguard team, who have now successfully completed three water rescues, have saved a total of nine lives. Their dedication and selflessness are truly commendable. In light of this incident, a warning has been issued to visitors of Rest Bay in Porthcawl to exercise extreme caution. The volunteer lifeguards at the popular seaside resort have urged people to be careful due to the expected huge waves and strong currents over the coming days.
We at The Agency urge everyone to stay safe and follow all safety precautions when visiting the beach.
