The highly anticipated video game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, has finally arrived and it does not disappoint. As a fan of the iconic film series, I was thrilled to step into the shoes of the beloved adventurer and embark on a journey filled with nostalgia, action, and adventure.
From the very beginning, the game captivated me with its opening scene, which perfectly captured the essence of Raiders of the Lost Ark. I couldn't help but feel like I was reliving the iconic moments of the film, and it was all thanks to the amazing attention to detail by MachineGames. This is truly the Indy game we have all been waiting for.
Playing as Indiana Jones in first person took some getting used to, but it truly made me feel like I was in his shoes (or should I say hat?). The switch to third person during cutscenes, climbing, and swinging with the whip added to the cinematic experience, making me feel like I was a part of an epic adventure.
Troy Baker, who portrays Joel in The Last of Us, delivers an exceptional performance as Indiana Jones. He perfectly captures Harrison Ford's voice and mannerisms, immersing me completely in the game.
Combat in the game is a blast, with a variety of weapons at your disposal. I particularly enjoyed using Indy's iconic whip to take down Nazis. The satisfaction of pushing a Nazi off a high scaffold and restarting just to do it all over again cannot be put into words.
Even fistfights require strategy, with blocks and dodges to master. But once you get the hang of it, it's extremely satisfying to punch a Nazi. And yes, there are dogs in the game, both attack dogs and wild ones in the desert. But as a dog lover, I appreciated the option to scare them off instead of killing them.
The game takes you to some incredible locations, such as the pyramids of Egypt, The Vatican, and the Himalayas. Each location is beautifully crafted and filled with lore and fictional letters from Adolf Hitler, adding depth to the world.
Traversal in the game is a mix of jumping, climbing, swinging, sliding, swimming, and shimmying, all as Indiana Jones. However, it can be a bit clunky at times, with some moments ending in a plummet to my doom. But overall, it's still a fun and thrilling experience.
The puzzles in the game are varied and creative, using Indy's camera as a tool to snap pictures for hints. They also require you to refer back to letters and items you have collected along the way, making it feel like you are truly piecing together clues as Indiana Jones would.
The iconic soundtrack by John Williams is as classic as ever, with the famous Raiders March still giving me chills. I even found myself replaying the soundtrack while writing this review.
In terms of performance, I tested the game on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 TI 8GB graphics card and it looked spectacular at high frame rates and settings. I also briefly tested it on Xbox Series X, which ran exceptionally well.
Overall, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a must-play for fans of the series and adventure games alike. Despite some minor flaws, it delivers everything you would hope for in an Indy game. It is now available in early access and will officially launch on PC and Xbox Series X|S on December 9th. And as for the PlayStation 5 release in Spring 2025, you can bet your life on it that I will be playing it again.
