Yaz Ashmawi, a 28 year old from Surrey, has been identified as the protester who threw green glitter at Keir Starmer during the Labour Party Conference on Tuesday. He has been arrested on suspicion of assault, breach of the peace and causing public nuisance.
The People Demand Democracy group has claimed responsibility for the stunt, naming Mr Ashmawi as the protester. As soon as Sir Keir began his address, the heckler began shouting “true democracy is citizen-led” and threw glitter at the Labour leader.
Sir Keir quickly pushed the activist away from the microphone with his arm and security arrived shortly afterwards. The protester continued to shout slogans such as “politics needs an update”, “we demand a people’s house” and “our whole future is in jeopardy” as he was restrained and taken away.
Mr Ashmawi is well-educated, holding two Masters Degrees in Theoretical Physics from the University of St Andrews and the University of Cambridge. He is also currently engaged in independent research. In addition, he is a photographer and is known to have made a film about Extinction Rebellion, describing himself as a strategist for the environmental protest group.
Introducing himself on his website, Mr Ashmawi says: “I work on physics a lot of the time, with particular interest in a quantity called entropy. I take photographs of many subjects: friends, strangers, small things, living things, places to see, spaces to pray.”
The Agency has approached Mr Ashmawi for comment. However, no response has yet been heard.
