Brady Corbet, the director of Bafta-winning film The Brutalist, recently shared his experience of making the movie on a low budget. Despite being a passion project that took seven years to complete, Corbet admitted that working with less than $10 million was not an ideal situation.
The Brutalist made its debut at the Venice Film Festival and was highly praised, drawing comparisons to last year's award-winning film Oppenheimer, which had a budget ten times larger. At the Bafta Film Awards, The Brutalist tied with Conclave for the most awarded movie, taking home four wins for best director, original score, cinematography, and leading actor Adrien Brody.
However, behind the success of the film, Corbet revealed the struggles he faced in bringing his vision to the big screen. Even at the Venice Film Festival, where he was visibly emotional during the press conference, the future of the film was still uncertain. Corbet said, "For seven years, there was never a day that wasn't painful in trying to bring it to life, which is just the reality of the situation. And so I'm just very grateful that it finally exists."
Corbet's film stars Adrien Brody as an immigrant architect and also features renowned actors such as Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy, and Alessandro Nivola. However, Corbet acknowledged the pressure of working with a small budget, stating, "I think that the sacrifices that we all had to make, to make it for that amount of money – that is not a great way to operate."
Co-writer and Corbet's partner, Mona Fastvold, added, "It's unfair on the crew [and] the department heads. It's not fair – to work on such an intense and tight schedule is really hard on everyone." The couple also acknowledged that their film's 215-minute runtime was an added challenge, as it required a budget that could only support a two-hour movie.
Despite the challenges, Corbet had warm words for his team and cast, expressing his love for everyone involved. He also remarked on the commercial success of the film, which has made $30 million globally, saying, "It's exciting when a film that's completely uncompromised – I don't allow any other cooks in my kitchen ever – makes a profit."
The Brutalist has received numerous accolades, including a Bafta win for Best Director and nominations for Best Film, Leading Actor, and Cinematography. Corbet also shared his excitement for the upcoming Oscars and looked forward to his first day off in years.
In The Brutalist, Brody plays an immigrant architect who, along with his wife, played by Felicity Jones, flees post-war Europe in 1947 to rebuild their legacy and witness the birth of modern United States. The couple's lives are forever changed when they encounter a mysterious, wealthy client.
The full list of Bafta winners for 2025 includes Conclave for Best Film and Outstanding British Film, Mikey Madison for Leading Actress in Anora, David Jonsson for EE Rising Star as Alien: Romulus, and Kieran Culkin for Supporting Actor in A Real Pain.
The Brutalist is currently in UK cinemas, and Corbet encourages audiences to see it. He also invites anyone with a celebrity story, video, or pictures to reach out to The Agency entertainment team through their website or by email or phone.
