The news of Siddaramaiah's resignation as the chief minister of Karnataka had spread like wildfire. The following day, he made his way to Sonia Gandhi's residence at 10, Janpath to meet with Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by his son Yathindra. This meeting held great significance, as Siddaramaiah was expected to discuss his plans and future course with the Congress leadership.
It was no secret that he had already refused a Rajya Sabha seat, stating his desire to stay in Karnataka and not take on any central role suggested by the party high command. Sources confirmed that Siddaramaiah had a one-on-one discussion with Rahul Gandhi, as Sonia Gandhi was not present at the time. During this meeting, Siddaramaiah expressed his gratitude to Rahul for giving him the opportunity to serve the state and also informed him about his resignation from the post of chief minister.
The sources also revealed that Siddaramaiah had put forth a request for his son and loyalists to be given a place in the new Karnataka Cabinet, with the possibility of his son being appointed as the deputy chief minister. After the meeting with Rahul, Siddaramaiah also had a discussion with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge. They talked about the formation of the new government in Karnataka and Siddaramaiah's future role in the party.
Randeep Surjewala, Congress general secretary, who was present during the meeting, described it as a pleasant and productive conversation where multiple issues were discussed. When asked about the transition of power in Karnataka, Surjewala reassured that it would be smooth and without any obstacles. The Karnataka Governor, Thaawarchand Gehlot, had formally accepted Siddaramaiah's resignation as the chief minister on Thursday.
It was speculated that the current Deputy Chief Minister, D K Shivakumar, would be taking over as the new chief minister. He was expected to hold separate discussions on government formation with K C Venugopal, the Congress general secretary in charge of organisation. Apart from these discussions, the Congress also planned to rearrange the party organisation in Karnataka.
This would be discussed in a meeting on Friday, and a Congress Legislature Party meeting was scheduled for Saturday to elect the new chief minister. Siddaramaiah, who had been a two-time chief minister, had joined the Congress in 2006 after switching sides from the JD. The news of his resignation had come as a surprise to many, and the party was now working on finding a suitable replacement for him.
