After Rich Moore, 71, and his loyal pup Finney went missing on August 19, a helicopter team scoured the area from where his car was parked towards the summit, but there was no sign of them.
Two months later, a hunter discovered Rich's body in a valley southeast of the summit, with Finney still waiting faithfully by his side.
The police and sheriff's office recovered Rich's body and took Finney to the vet for treatment.
The hiking route from Rich's car to Blackhead Peak in southwestern Colorado is three miles with an elevation of 2,500 feet, and is described as "rough, rocky and steep". The trail starts on a road, but the last stretch is an unmaintained 'social trail'.
Delinda Vanne-Brightyn, a member of the search and rescue squad, posted on Facebook: "We searched from just under the peak-top and directly west, searching down the mountain toward where his car was located. He was found 2.5 miles east of the mountain-top beneath where we were inserted by helicopter."
Rich's cause of death has not been released, but officials said foul play is not suspected. It's unknown how his small dog survived for two months, but Finney has been reunited with his family.
This isn't the first time a pup has survived perilous conditions in the mountains. In Wales, another dog went missing during a walk and was found two weeks later.
Rich and Finney's story is a testament to the bond between humans and their furry friends.
